Is it possible to force the use of serial numbers in inventory? We are using 8.1C.

Set a count of the number of serial numbers on the Units tab of the item.

We do have that, so it "allows" us to put serial numbers on the items so tagged. What I'd like to know is if there is any way to "force" the use of serial numbers.
Possible?

On the 'System Defaults' tab in OrderEntry there is an option 'Serial Entry Mode' that option can be: 'None', 'Auto', 'Prompt' (Press F1 in the app for details)

I'll throw my 2 cents in. I do not use this feature because when we move items to shipped, we can create the serial number line but must leave it blank and print a picking slip to the warehouse (we do not know the serial number yet). The warehouse staff picks the item and invoices the order, weather they enter a serial number of not. My defination of forced is that the order can not be invoiced until the serial number is entered.

Hello Doug,
Why not move the items to shipped AFTER the warehouse staff have told you how many and what serial numbers were shipped on the picking slip?

Hi Andrew,
The picking slip tells the warehouse how many on an order to ship. I don't want the warehouse staff deciding which customers are getting the products and which ones arn't. In our system here, the warehouse staff picks the order, invoices it and sends the invoice with the product to the customer.

Hi Doug,
Does this issue arise when you partially ship an order? (ie, you actually only want the warehouse to ship 3 when the customer has ordered 5)?

OK, but if you don't want to ship any, then presumably you just don't print the picking list until you want to ship. There is a status on the order as to whether the picking slip has been printed.

Yes, but the customer wants the rest of their order.

So me again...
I've done what was suggested on page 1,
"On the 'System Defaults' tab in OrderEntry there is an option 'Serial Entry Mode' that option can be: 'None', 'Auto', 'Prompt' (Press F1 in the app for details)".
I must be having a bad day, though, because nothing changes when I make the change on the Profile tab. Does not matter if I have 'none' or 'auto' or 'prompt'. The same thing happens for each trial I run. No automatic serial number pops up, no prompt happens. Is there a second part to this? I do have the item tagged to have 2 serial lines.

Barb: Each item has to be configured to allow entry of Serial numbers. Edit the item in IC, select the "Units" tab and enter a number between 1 and 5 into the "Serial numbers" field. That number determines how many serial numbers can be attached to each line item in OE.

As I mentioned in the last sentence I wrote, we already have each of the items tagged, in inventory, with 2 serial numbers each (some of our serial numbers are longer, so we need 2 lines). I have tested this out, and cannot make the prompt come up, nor the auto, so I must be missing a second half of the equation.
We do have the item tagged in inventory. Is there a second area that needs to be touched?

Hi Barb,
The option just controls whether the serial number lines are automatically added to the order/invoice (Quantities must be shipped for the lines to be added). Someone must edit the lines to insert the serial numbers.
My guess is that you are looking for a different behaviour?
I've attached a GridView workspace that I think displayed the lines on an invoice where the necessary serial numbers have not been entered (up to a maximum of 5). Perhaps someone can tell me if it is useful (or indeed whether it even works - the sample data is pretty limited).
